They aren't totally sure, but it started we think with what was diagnosed by an Urgent Care as a sinus infection. Two rounds of antibiotics and I still didn't feel greatover a one month period. Went to a different urgent care a couple of weeks later because I thought I had a broken rib (long story) and at that time when they did the chest x-ray they asked me if I knew I had pneumonia. I said no, I had no fever, no cough, etc. They sent me for a CT scan that said the same thing, gave me antibiotics and sent me on my way. Felt fine so I didn't think anything of it. This was in the beginning of June. Fast forward to being in Boston for a 3 day trip over Aug 10th. Right before we left FL, I was having some shortness of breath, but didn't think anything of it. By the time we were to leave on Wed, I couldn't breathe, went to the ER at Mass General and was admitted right away. Had a week and a half stay. Was very close to being on a ventilator, but a smart resident said "You know it looks like pneumonia, but maybe it's something else. Let's give her some steriods." Thank God he did because I'd be dead if they had stayed with just antibiotics.
So the short answer is that they don't know.

Scary! Hope you get better soon.
That resident must have watched some House MD episodes...
